“The math doesn’t math. It’s momwashing,” — Lauren Smith Brody
While I have many thoughts on the lasting impacts of the steaming pile of horse manure also known as the One Big Beaut… (ugh, I can’t even type it. You know what I’m talking about), I’ll spare you. Enough digital ink has spilled to gag on for the moment.
In all the coverage, though, one “bright spot” seemed to surface out of darkness – a boost for child care. A headline here, a headline there, bold claims of “child care wins” to shine up that demoralizing turd.
Last Friday, on a call with Francesca Donner, founder and editor at The Persistent, we got to chatting about those headlines (e.g. Fortune – “...Billions in Child Care Wins…”; Vox — “How the GOP Beat the Democrats to a Child Care Win”).
Realizing that moms (the ones who would benefit most from better child care policy) are pretty busy and distracted right now, we had a moment of “wait, does everyone actually think there was good stuff in there?!” After all, it’s easy to glance those headlines and assume something in that bill aims to move the needle towards solving the ever-growing child care crisis.
Alas. No. That’s not what this is.
